A pastor in Maryville, Ill. was shot by a parishioner in the heart while delivering a service in church. The pastor, Rev. Fred Winters, reportedly deflected the first shot with a bible fired by the assailant. Witnesses said that the gunman, Terry J. Sedlacek, shot a total of 4 shots with a .45 pistol until the weapon jammed.
Sedlacek reportedly once suffered from Lyme disease, a bacterial disease commonly transmitted to humans by tick bites. His attorney told the Belleville News-Democrat that he acquired Lyme disease several years ago and suffered mental and physical conditions as a consequence. But MSNBC quoted Dr. Eugene Shapiro, an expert on the disease from Yale University as saying “Lyme disease doesn’t cause people to shoot people.”
